Expert PCBA Solutions for Educational Robots: A Full-Process Case Study

Introduction

As a sales manager at LHD TECH, I have always believed that the essence of foreign trade is not transactions, but understanding the customer’s needs with professionalism, solving pain points with patience, and guarding trust with responsibility.

In 2021, I deeply participated in the full PCBA project cooperation of an Emotional Companion & Educational Robot, from demand break down, sample validate to the landing of two big orders, I accompanied the customers of our factory inspections and confirm assembly processes&details, accumulating complete practical experience in PCBA foreducational robots. This robot can serve education for children, elderly care, business reception and some other scenarios, with core capabilities such as multi-modal interaction, autonomous movement, open SDK customization, putting extremely high requirements on PCBA stability, low power consumption, anti-interference and integration. This article was combined with real project experience and robot technical, I shared how to support high-end educational robots to go global with PCBA strength, and looks forward to cooperating with more customers in the robot field.

Project Origin: High-End Emotional Companion Robot & Educational Robots, PCBA as the Core

This cooperative robot is positioned as an emotional social & educational companion, covering four major application scenarios: education support (remote classes for hospitalized students, special education assistance, programming enlightenment), elderly care (companionship, medication reminders, fall prevention monitoring), business reception (24/7 greeting, intelligent guidance, scene-based interaction), social integration (autism assistance, remote social interaction, personalized companionship), equipped with Android open SDK, supporting customers in deep custom functions.

The difference from ordinary early education machines, this features autonomous movement, multi-modal emotional interaction, multi-sensor fusion, long battery life and stable operation, and open platform expansion, putting forward four rigid requirements for PCBA:

  1. High integration: Integrate main control, motion control, visual acquisition, audio processing, wireless communication, sensor acquisition and other modules in a compact body.
  2. Extreme stability: 7×24 hours of continuous operation without disconnection, no delay in voice/vision, and precise movement control without drift.
  3. Low power consumption & long battery life: Meet all-day accompanying use, long charging interval, low heat generation, safe and reliable.
  4. Strong anti-interference: Camera, microphone, motor, WiFi/Bluetooth coexist without crosstalk, ensuring clear voice recognition and image collection.

Previously, due to the immature PCBA solution, the customer faced problems such as unstable signal of the education robot system, the excessive power consumption, motor drive stuttering, and sensor false triggering, resulting in serious delays in R&D and mass production of educational robots.Instead of rushing to quote, we first fully decomposed the needs with the customer: from functional definition, hardware interface, sensor layout, motor drive parameters to production process, quality inspection standards, delivery cycle, locked details one by one.

Combined with LHD’s advantages in HDI high-density interconnection, precision SMT and full-process quality control, we quickly output a customized PCBA solution and won the initial trust of the customer.

Full-Process Cultivation: From Detail Tackling to Order Landing, Supporting High-End Robots with Ingenuity

This robot has a complex structure, integrating dozens of core components such as three-axis motor and universal walking mechanism, HD camera, multi-microphone array, multi-type sensors, touch display, WiFi/Bluetooth dual-mode communication, and PCBA needs to cooperate accurately with each component. I led the establishment of a special docking team, with foreign trade + engineering + production + quality four-party linkage, following up every link throughout the process.

 Core Component and PCBA Adaptation Tackling

  • Motor drive and autonomous movement: The robot adopts three-axis power and universal wheel design, requiring smooth obstacle crossing and precise positioning. We repeatedly adjusted the drive circuit, optimized current output and protection mechanism, ensuring stable walking speed, smooth steering, and extremely low noise, suitable for quiet scenes such as home, education and elderly care.
  • Visual and audio system: The camera is responsible for face tracking and image recognition, and the microphone array is responsible for far-field voice pickup. We adopted layered wiring + shielding design, isolated power lines and signal lines, greatly reduced electromagnetic interference, ensuring sensitive voice wake-up, clear image transmission, no lag and no delay-critical for the smooth operation of educational robots.
  • Multi-sensor fusion: Integrated infrared, distance measurement, temperature sensing, ground detection and other sensors. PCBA optimized interface timing and sampling accuracy to achieve real-time data synchronization, ensuring stable and reliable environmental perception, anti-fall, safety monitoring and other functions.
  • Open SDK and scalability: The robot supports secondary development on Android platform. We reserved standardized interfaces in the PCBA stage, optimized power distribution and signal integrity, ensuring that customers can quickly load education programs, elderly care logic, reception scripts, reducing development thresholds and failure rates forrobotics in education applications.

Factory Inspection and Mass Production Details

To dispel customers’ concerns about mass production quality and delivery, we invited customers to visit our factory, accompanied them throughout the SMT workshop, test laboratory, and assembly production line, fully displaying the whole PCBA process: component inspection → baking and dehumidification → high-precision printing → SMT placement → reflow soldering → AOI optical inspection → X-Ray inspection → FCT full-function test → aging verification → packaging and shipment, every step strictly in accordance with the ISO 9001 system.

Aiming at key issues such as robot assembly accuracy, component docking tolerance, mass production yield guarantee, after-sales emergency plan, we had in-depth communication with customers for 3 days, confirmed one by one, formed written specifications, and finally successfully signed the first order. Relying on stable quality and efficient service, we subsequently reached the second order, becoming a milestone robot project in my foreign trade career.

Priority is given to industrial-grade main control chips, motor drives, sensors and passive devices, meeting wide-temperature operation and long-term stable operation; the main control chip balances computing power and power consumption, supporting multi-task parallelism (voice processing, image recognition, motion control, wireless connection), while ensuring long battery life; all devices comply with safety regulations, suitable for sensitive use scenarios such as children and the elderly.

Design Optimization: Integration, Anti-Interference, Easy Mass Production

  • High density and miniaturization: Adopting HDI blind and buried hole technology, realizing multi-module integration in limited space, reducing the whole machine volume.
  • Signal integrity: Camera, microphone, motor drive partition wiring, shielding interference, ensuring smooth interaction.
  • Heat dissipation and structural friendliness: Optimize layout and heat dissipation design, control temperature rise, adapt to the whole machine structure and assembly.
  • Open expansion: Reserve universal interfaces, support SDK development and function iteration, compatible with multi-scenario upgrades such as education, elderly care, and reception.

Quality Control: Full Process, Traceable, High Reliability

  • Strict incoming material inspection, traceable key devices.
  • SMT precision control, stable yield of precision packages such as BGA and QFN.
  • Functional test coverage: voice wake-up, image collection, motor movement, wireless connection, sensor response, ESD protection.
  • Aging and reliability verification in actual use environment, ensuring zero hidden dangers after shipment.

Review and Prospect: Experience Precipitation, Empowering More Global Robot Partners

In 2024, due to changes in the end market, the project came to a phased end. However, this full-process experience from 0 to 1, from solution to mass production, from communication to factory inspection has made me grow into a foreign trade specialist proficient in PCBA for emotional companion/robotics education/social robots. I deeply understand:
